Brain tissue changes at different phases of cerebral edema. At an early stage of cerebral edema, cellular expansion reduces the intercellular space which decreases electrical current density through tissue under the same excitation, thus increasing tissue impedance. Subsequently, necrotic or ruptured neurocytes enhance cellular membrane permeability. At this stage, electrical current easily passes through brain tissue, which results in a further reduction in tissue impedance. Adapted from [96]
