Conjugative plasmids undergo intra- and inter-incompatibility group competitions via entry exclusion and fertility inhibition. The generic plasmid CP2 prevents the conjugal transfer of CP1 from a different incompatibility group by downregulating the expression of CP1 tra genes and targeting the type IV coupling protein of CP1. A recipient with CP1 or CP1-related CPs that have similar entry exclusion systems such will block the entry of CP1 by destabilizing mating pair formation.
