Emerging and re-emerging viral diseases: a global threat

Emerging and re-emerging viral diseases are always at the center of the world’s attention, and the global impact of viral infections on human health has never been more clear. During the past decades, we have experienced the continuing outbreaks of SARS, H1N1, H7N9, MERS, Dengue, and Ebola throughout the world. All these unexpected nightmares have dramatically raised our awareness that viral diseases may emerge or re-emerge at any time, in any place, and affect anyone. There is increasing recognition that viruses do not respect borders and that elimination of viral disease at the epidemic areas will finally protect the rest of the world. The fighting with Ebola in West Africa illustrate a good example of how to stop the global threat by collaborations between practitioners and researchers from national and aboard.

In recent years, the field of emerging viral diseases has witnessed many exciting new findings and breakthroughs across a wide range of virology-related disciplines. These advances span a wide spectrum of research areas, including the identification and characterization of novel viruses, genome-based phylogenetic analysis of virus evolution, structural resolution of viral particles and viral proteins, the development of new research tools such as reporter virus and reverse genetics, and the design and evaluation of novel vaccines and antivirals.

In this thematic series, we would like to provide a glimpse into the latest research on emerging and re-emerging viral diseases and highlight some of the important research achievements in recent years. A variety of articles including Research, Review, Case Report and Study Protocol are welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Epidemiology
  • Disease surveillance and control
  • Biosafety and biosecurity
  • Pathogenesis
  • Viral replication and translation
  • Clinical characterization and diagnosis
  • Vaccine and antiviral development

All manuscripts must be received by September 30, 2016 for consideration for the thematic series. Please refer to our Submission Guidelines for information on preparing your manuscript and submit your manuscript via our online submission system. Please highlight that your submission is to be considered for the thematic series in your cover letter. For rapid feedback on the potential suitability of an article for this thematic series, please submit a pre-submission enquiry to editorial@mmrjournal.org. The publication costs for Military Medical Research are currently covered by the journal, so authors don’t need to pay an article-processing charge.
